Jan Ertl is a third-year in the College at the University of Chicago, where he studies mathematics and economics. During the summer of 2016, he was a Brickell Metcalf intern at the Becker Friedman Institute, serving as a research assistant for Associate Professor Lawrence Schmidt in the Department of Economics.
Ertl is spending his 2016 autumn quarter as a visiting student at St. Catherine's College, University of Oxford. His research at Oxford centers on how the European Union's institutional and market design influence political participation, trade, finance, and fiscal policy.
On campus, Ertl is the president of the student group "EUChicago," a chapter of the European Horizons policy think tank founded at Yale in 2015. Ertl is also involved in nonprofit consulting, tutoring, and advising. He is an advocate for international students on campus, and works to build an inclusive, LGBTQ-friendly community.
