Oriol Carbonell-Nicolau's research focuses on game theory and public economic theory. He has more recently focused on equilibrium refinement for discontinuous games.

He is currently an associate professor of economics at Rutgers University and previously served as a visitor at the Department d'Economia i d'Historia Economia and the Center for the Study of Organizations and Decisions in Economics, both at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona.

He received his BS and MSc in economics from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in 1996 and 1997, respectively, and his PhD in economics from New York University in 2003.
