Instructions
The following materials are required for a complete application to the Expanding Diversity in Economics Summer Institute:
- A completed online application, including:
  - Unofficial transcripts for all post-secondary institutions attended
  - A resumé
  - Two (2) candidate statements of no more than 250 words each on the topics of “Diversity in Economics” and "Social Issues of Interest," described in further detail within this application
- Two (2) letters of recommendation, which will be sent separately by recommenders (see guidance in Step 7)
Application Deadline: February 7, 2022 at 11:59pm CST.

Letters of Recommendation Guidelines
We require two separate letters of recommendation from faculty, instructors, academic advisors at your current institution, or other suitable recommenders outlined below. Recommenders should be familiar with your academic (and personal) progress, credentials, and/or research experience.

Suitable recommenders include:

· Undergraduate faculty and academic advisors

· High school teachers of college-level quantitative courses (AP Calculus, AP Micro- or Macroeconomics, AP Statistics, IB Calculus, etc.)

· College Access and Success Program Advisors (The Posse Foundation, KIPP Through College & Career, Questbridge, ScholarMatch, etc.)

· Research supervisors

Recommenders should use the following outline of requirements and send their letters directly to summerecon@uchicago.edu. Your application will not be complete until we receive the two letters of recommendation.

Study Title: Effectiveness of the BFI EDE Summer Institute

A research team at the University of Chicago is conducting a study to measure the impact of the Expanding Diversity in Economics (EDE) Summer Institute, hosted by the Becker Friedman Institute (BFI). This study will make use of information from the EDE application.

We are asking your permission to share your EDE application data with the research team. This includes only the answers you provided as part of the application form; it does not include transcripts, CV, or recommendations. The research team may also follow up with applicants in the future.

Your participation is completely voluntary, and you are not required to participate in order to submit your application. Your willingness to share application information with the study team, or not, has no bearing on the EDE selection process whatsoever. You may also decide to withdraw your consent in the future; if you withdraw consent in the future, researchers will ask if the information already collected from you can be used.

Only study personnel approved by the university’s institutional review board (IRB) will be authorized to access the data, which will be used for research purposes only. Any information which can directly identify you will be held confidential, accessed only by the research team, and will be protected and stored on an encrypted server for the duration of the study (at least five years). De-identified information from this study may be used for future research studies.

Taking part in this research by sharing your application data with the research team will not benefit you directly, but findings from this research may be used to improve the program in the future. Your participation does not involve any risk to you.

Refusal to consent, or withdrawing your consent later, will involve no penalty or loss of benefits to which you might otherwise be entitled and has no bearing on the EDE selection process.
