On December 1, BFI-China and Chicago Booth hosted a brownbag lunch conversation with Chenggang Xu (Stanford University), moderated by Zhiguo He (University of Chicago) and Chang-Tai Hsieh (University of Chicago).

Over the past four decades, China has experienced a period of unparalleled, historic change, along with its astonishing economic growth. But recently, evidence has been mounting that the Chinese leadership may be embarking on a “new journey” by implementing a hard pivot toward asserting greater state control over the society, which has sparked questions among policymakers, practitioners, and academics about what motivates Beijing’s actions and what the consequences will be.
