The Empirics and Methods in Economics Conference (EMCON) is a two-day student-run conference for PhD students interested in applied topics and empirical methods in Economics. The conference offers students an excellent opportunity to present their work, exchange ideas with their peers and receive feedback from a discussant and a diverse audience.
This year’s conference took place on October 12-13, 2018 at Northwestern University and was sponsored by the departments of Economics at Northwestern University and The University of Chicago. Prof. Seema Jayachandran (NU) gave the keynote talk and Prof. Peter Hull (UChicago) gave the closing remarks. Faculty members from both organizing universities attended the presentations.
The preliminary program can be found here.
Presentation format: Presentations were 35 minutes long, with 10 minutes of discussion afterwards. We asked presenters to also act as discussants for a paper (although we exempted job market candidates from this whenever possible).
The conference is generously supported by the Global Poverty Research Lab (GPRL), the Becker-Friedman Institute (BFI), and the Department of Economics at Northwestern University. Partial reimbursement for transportation expenses was available. Registration and meals during the conference were covered, but we were not able to pay for participants’ accommodation. When requested, we matched conference participants with local student hosts.
