The Empirics and Methods in Economics Conference (EMCON) is a two-day student-run conference for PhD students interested in applied topics and empirical methods in Economics. The conference offers students an excellent opportunity to present their work, exchange ideas with their peers, and receive feedback from a discussant and a diverse audience.
This year’s conference will take place on October 13-14, 2017 at the University of Chicago. We are pleased to announce that Michael Greenstone (University of Chicago) will give the keynote talk, and Mar Reguant (Northwester) will give concluding remarks. Faculty members from both organizing universities will attend the presentations.
We invite submissions of single- or co-authored papers from PhD students and postdoctoral researchers working on a broad range of empirical topics. We especially encourage the submission of papers addressing challenging empirical questions using interesting methodogical approaches, including creative reduced-form strategies, original structural estimation frameworks, and novel datasets. Examples of relevant fields are behavioral economics, development, econometrics, education, environmental and engery, experimental, finance, health, industrial organization, economic history, international trade, labor, applied macroeconomics, political economy, public economics, and urban economics. Econometric theory paper submissions will also be considered, so long as there is a motivating empirical application.
The conference is generously supported by the Center for the Study of Development Economics (CSDE), the Becker Friedman Institute (BFI) at the University of Chicago, the Buffett Institute, and the Applied Micro Center at Northwestern University. Partial reimbursment for travel expenses is available on a case-by-case basis. Meals during the conference will be covered, but we are not able to pay for participants’ accommodation. If requested, we will do our best to match conference participants with local student hosts.
