This discussion took place on FridayJanuary 29th.

The Becker Friedman Institute is pleased to have joined the Harris School of Public Policy to cohost this lunchtime discussion with Indermit Gill, AM’85, PhD’89 (Economics), Director, Development Policy in the Office of the Chief Economist at the World Bank.

In 2008, Paul Krugman called Europe the “comeback continent.” In 2010, after the Greece crisis broke, he wrote “The real lesson from Europe is actually the opposite of what conservatives claim: Europe is an economic success, and that success shows that social democracy works … taking the longer view, the European economy works; it grows; it’s as dynamic, all in all, as our own.” The discussion will explore who’s right: Krugman or the conservatives.

The discussion was moderated by Thomas Coleman, executive director of the Center for Economic Policy, and Benjamin Keys, assistant professor at Chicago Harris.
