Many people think the only solution to gun violence is gun control. Others think gun violence is caused by either intrinsically bad people unafraid of the criminal justice system, or else bad economic conditions that lead desperate people to turn to violence.

This has made the problem of American gun violence seem impossible to solve. But in his new book, Unforgiving Places: The Unexpected Origins of American Gun Violence, Jens Ludwig argues that gun violence only seems impossible to solve.
