CHICAGO, IL – The Becker Friedman Institute for Economics (BFI) at the University of Chicago is pleased to announce the appointment of energy trading expert Daniela Fusco Alcaro to its Advisory Council. The Advisory Council, composed of a prestigious group of business and academic leaders with a range of backgrounds, plays a guiding role in setting the goals and direction of the Institute.
“Daniela brings tremendous experience and a fresh perspective to our Advisory Council that I’m confident will help us increase our global impact and promote the University’s frontier economics research,” said Michael Greenstone, BFI Director and the Milton Friedman Distinguished Service Professor in Economics and the College. “We are delighted to have her join BFI’s leadership team and look forward to working together to support our work, with particular focus on her expertise in the energy sector, and her understanding of Latin America.”
Alcaro is the co-founder and co-CEO of Stima Energia, a Brazilian energy trading company established in 2017 that seeks to reduce market inefficiencies and to increase the competitiveness and liquidity of the electricity trading market. She is also a co-founder of two other clean energy start-ups in Brazil dedicated to solar generation and energy retail business, and an angel investor for an energy technology start-up dedicated to metering. Alcaro received her B.A. in Business Administration from ESPM and her MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business (Class of ‘06).
“As a member of the Advisory Council, I aim to bring a real-life perspective to BFI discussions on how to effectively promote research findings and to foster stronger relationships between BFI and Latin America, especially with Brazil,” said Alcaro. “As an entrepreneur in the energy sector, I believe there are many opportunities for University of Chicago researchers, through BFI and the Energy Policy Institute (EPIC), to collaborate with governments and academic institutions in Latin America to address energy transition and environmental challenges.” She added, “In the energy sector, knowledge is critical to creating more effective solutions, and opportunities to foster the exchange of ideas will contribute to the development of our energy market.”
BFI serves as a hub for cutting-edge analysis and research across the entire University of Chicago economics community, uniting researchers from the Booth School of Business, the Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics, the Harris School of Public Policy, and the Law School in an unparalleled effort to uncover new ways of thinking about economics. BFI puts those ideas into action by translating rigorous research into accessible and relevant formats, and proactively disseminating it to key decision- makers around the world.
“I am thrilled to welcome Daniela as a member of our distinguished Advisory Council,” said Erik Hurst, BFI Deputy Director and V. Duane Rath Professor of Economics at the Booth School of Business. “We value Daniela’s perspective as an accomplished leader in the energy sector, and deeply appreciate her ongoing commitment to the University of Chicago and to BFI.”
