The Becker Friedman Institute for Economics at The University of Chicago (BFI) is pleased to announce the appointment of three new Saieh Family Fellows in Economics.
The Saieh Fellows Program provides funding and support for early-career scholars who have recently completed their PhDs in economics. Fellows spend one or two years on campus, during which they have the opportunity to conduct independent research and collaborate with faculty and other scholars at the university.
“We are thrilled with this year’s cohort of Saieh Fellows,” said Erik Hurst, the Frank P. and Marianne R. Diassi Distinguished Service Professor of Economics at Chicago Booth and Director of BFI. “They are some of the most accomplished young economists in our field, and we are excited to welcome them to campus.”
The 2024-25 cohort of Saieh Fellows includes:
- Juan Manuel Castro-Vincenzi, who is the Michael Chae Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Economics at Harvard University and will join the Department of Economics at The University of Chicago as an Assistant Professor.
- Hugo Lhullier, who received his PhD in Economics from Princeton University and will join the Department of Economics at Columbia University as an Assistant Professor.
- Frank Yang, who is a PhD candidate in Economics at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Saieh Fellows receive a competitive salary, research support, and access to the university’s academic resources and facilities. The program also offers opportunities for professional development and networking through workshops, seminars, and conferences. The aim of the program is to support the development of the next generation of leading economists and social scientists.
In its short history, the Saieh Family Fellows in Economics has attracted and supported leading early-career scholars. Approximately half of the fellows have been selected to present at the annual Review of Economic Studies tour, which brings a small number of the world’s most promising graduating doctoral students in economics and finance to present their research to audiences in Europe. Past fellowship recipients now hold faculty positions at Chicago Booth and the University’s Kenneth C. Griffin Department of Economics, Brown University, Columbia University, Harvard University, MIT, Northwestern University, Princeton University, Stanford University, UCLA, University of Pennsylvania, University of Southern California, and Yale.
The Saieh Family Fellows program is permanently endowed by a generous gift from University of Chicago trustee and alumnus Alvaro Saieh. For a list of all current and past Saieh Family Fellows, click here.
