Neiva Fortes is a PhD student in Economics at Syracuse University, with research interests in health and labor economics. Her work mainly focuses on how early-life environments and policy interventions influence outcomes, especially among vulnerable populations. She is broadly interested in the intersection of education, health, and inequality, with a focus on how institutional structures affect youth behavior and well-being. Her future job market paper looks at the impact of state-mandated elementary school recess laws on discriminatory bullying and harassment. Neiva also has a paper studying the spillover effects of youth’s chronic illnesses on their siblings’ health. At Syracuse University, Neiva has had the chance to work with professors such as John Cawley and Monica Deza. She earned her bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics at Hartwick College.
