Juan Pablo Nicolini focuses his academic research on macroeconomic and monetary policy, with a recent emphasis on the fiscal histories of Latin American countries.
Nicolini was previously assistant professor at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México and at the economics department of the Universidad Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. In 1994, he became a full-time professor at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in 1994 and was chairman of the economics department there until 1999, positioning it as one of the discipline’s best research centers in Latin America. From 2001 to 2009, he served as the university’s rector (president).
After several stints as a visiting researcher with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Nicolini was named senior economist there in 2009, while maintaining a part-time position at Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Chicago, the Universidad Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), and the Universidad Carlos III (Madrid). He is also a fellow of the Econometrics Society.
Nicolini obtained a PhD in economics at the University of Chicago in 1991. He obtained his undergraduate degree in economics from Universidad de Tucumán, Argentina.
